Trans Union bankruptcy remark settlement

Trans Union has agreed to an $8.31 million settlement over consumer reports it sold that carried a bankruptcy remark on a credit account while the same report showed no matching bankruptcy in its public records section. If a report about you went to a third party between January 6, 2020 and January 31, 2023, you may be eligible. The notice estimates about $1,000 for claimants in the group with no locatable bankruptcy record and about $350 for the group whose bankruptcies were over ten years old; the first group also gets about $100 without filing. Claims close October 30, 2026, filing on the official site is free, and those amounts are estimates that shift with the number of claims.

When the money moves

Expected

The court is scheduled to consider final approval on December 2, 2026. The notice ties payment to the settlement becoming final, which an appeal would push back.

Read off the official notice, in its own words. These dates slip — an appeal can move a distribution by a year or more — so treat it as the administrator's plan rather than a schedule.

The notice estimates about $1,000 for a claimant in the group with no locatable bankruptcy record, and about $350 for the group whose bankruptcies were more than ten years old; the first group also receives about $100 without filing anything. The online form asks for the Claim Number and PIN from the mailed or emailed notice, and the administrator's phone line is the route if you cannot find yours. Every figure moves with the number of claims filed.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Between January 6, 2020 and January 31, 2023, did a lender, landlord or employer pull a Trans Union credit report on you?
Did a Trans Union report show a bankruptcy note on an account when you had no bankruptcy on record, or only one filed more than ten years earlier?
Did you get a letter or email about this settlement carrying a Claim Number and PIN?

The administrator can reissue these by phone if you no longer have the notice.
