HealthPort insurance records fee settlement

This Allegheny County settlement covers people who asked a Pennsylvania healthcare provider for copies of medical records in connection with a life or health insurance application, between December 17, 2009 and July 23, 2026, and paid HealthPort Technologies more than the Medical Records Act allows. Patients, their designees and representatives are in the class alongside the lawyers, firms and companies that made such requests, so if that was you, you may be eligible to recover 67.5 percent of the alleged overpayment — the amount turns on what you were invoiced, and no payout range is published. A proof of claim must be submitted by December 31, 2026, and it opens with the Class Member ID from the mailed notice. Filing on the official settlement site is free, and only the administrator decides what a claim is worth.

Expected

The notice says payment follows court approval and the resolution of any appeals. The fairness hearing is set for December 1, 2026 while claims stay open to December 31, 2026, so no distribution date is published yet.

Read off the official notice, in its own words. These dates slip — an appeal can move a distribution by a year or more — so treat it as the administrator's plan rather than a schedule.

P.I.T. Retrievals, LLC v. HealthPort Technologies, LLC · GD-13-023729 · Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

An approved claim returns 67.5 percent of what the claimant allegedly overpaid in basic fees, search-and-retrieval fees and per-page copying charges, so the amount depends entirely on what was invoiced. No fund total or payout range is published. The online proof of claim opens with the Class Member ID from the mailed notice, which is also how the administrator shows you the transactions it holds. Class counsel will ask the court for no more than $65,906.80 in fees and costs, plus $2,500 for the class representative.

Why this case happened

The case says HealthPort charged more than Pennsylvania's Medical Records Act allows for copies of medical records requested in connection with life and health insurance applications. The class covers patients, their designees and representatives as well as the people, lawyers, law firms and companies that made such requests. HealthPort denies the allegations and the court has not ruled on the merits. This is a separate case from the two Landay actions against Datavant, with its own docket and its own settlement site.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Did you pay HealthPort Technologies for copies of medical records from a Pennsylvania provider between December 17, 2009 and July 23, 2026?

The class covers requests made in connection with an application for life or health insurance.

Do you have the Class Member ID from the notice the administrator mailed you?

The online proof of claim will not open without it, and it lists the transactions already on file.
