Free credit freezes and fraud alerts

A credit freeze blocks new accounts from being opened in your name, and since 2018 it is free for everyone at all three bureaus. After a data-breach notice, a freeze is the strongest free protection available — stronger than the monitoring settlements offer. The FTC page links to each bureau's official freeze page.

Official sites usually allow heirs to claim after they prove authority. Confirm the rules on the official page.

USA.gov and NAUPA say you can search official sites at no charge. Finder services may charge a cut.
