Navy Federal unauthorized personal loan settlement

Navy Federal Credit Union has settled claims that personal loans were opened in members' names from unfamiliar devices and that it then denied the members' fraud disputes. Members who had such a loan opened between January 1, 2023 and January 31, 2025, reported it as fraud, had the dispute denied in whole or in part, and never got the money back may be eligible. The settlement cancels the loan, requests deletion of the related credit reporting and refunds payments already made without any claim form; a further $250 requires a claim by November 29, 2026. Filing on the official settlement site is free.

Expected

The court is due to consider final approval on December 9, 2026, a date the notice says may change, and the settlement's benefits follow that decision.

Read off the official notice, in its own words. These dates slip — an appeal can move a distribution by a year or more — so treat it as the administrator's plan rather than a schedule.

Stacy Edey, et al. v. Navy Federal Credit Union · 2:25-cv-554 · U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division

The $250 is the only part that needs a claim form. Cancelling the loan, asking the credit bureaus to delete the reporting tied to it, and refunding the payments already made — including amounts taken by offset — happen without a claim, and their value depends on how much was drawn and repaid. The $250 figure is what the notice describes, not a guaranteed payment.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Was a Navy Federal personal loan opened in your name between January 2023 and January 2025 that you did not apply for?

The class covers loans applied for from a device Navy Federal did not recognise, where the funds were deposited.

Did you report that loan to Navy Federal as fraud and have your claim denied in whole or in part?

A denied or partly denied fraud dispute is part of the class definition.

Were the loan funds recovered and returned to you in full?

The class covers members whose funds were never recovered.
