Laguna Honda Hospital patient privacy and patients' rights settlement

San Francisco has agreed to pay $5,750,000 to settle claims brought for more than 700 current and former residents of Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center over patient privacy and patients' rights. The plan describes two groups: patients notified in writing of a confidentiality breach between March 23, 2017 and February 17, 2026, with a payment put at $750, and patients who lived at the hospital between April 14, 2022 and August 16, 2023, with a base payment put at $1,000 plus a share of what is left over. Anyone covered has until November 10, 2026 to submit a distribution election, opt out, or object, and the court is due to consider final approval on January 29, 2027. The election portal opens only with the CPT ID and passcode printed on the mailed notice, so a person who believes they are covered but was never written to should contact CPT Group on 1-888-261-1713 or at LHHSettlement@cptgroup.com. Taking part is free, and the amounts are estimates that depend on the court's approval and on how many people take part.

When the money moves

What the official materials say about the payment schedule for this settlement, and what the administrator has published since. Every figure below is linked to the page it was read from.

Expected

Nothing is paid before the court rules. The settlement website sets final approval for January 29, 2027 at 9:20 a.m., and payments would follow that hearing and any appeal.

Read off the official notice, in its own words. These dates slip — an appeal can move a distribution by a year or more — so treat it as the administrator's plan rather than a schedule.

The fund is $5,750,000; San Francisco's Board of Supervisors authorised $5,845,000 for the case in ordinance 257-25 on December 9, 2025. The notice puts the Confidentiality Class payment at $750 and the Patients' Rights Class base payment at $1,000, plus a share of what is left, so the figures move with how many people take part and with what the court approves. Nothing is guaranteed. The election opens with the ID from the mailed notice; there is no fee, and CPT Group takes calls on 1-888-261-1713.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Were you a patient or resident at Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in San Francisco?
Were you living at Laguna Honda at any point between April 14, 2022 and August 16, 2023?

That window defines the Patients' Rights Class, which has the higher base payment.

Did you or your representative get a written notice from the hospital saying your confidential information had been disclosed?

That notice defines the Confidentiality Class and carries the ID the election portal asks for.
