Activision Blizzard employment settlement

The California Civil Rights Department sued Activision Blizzard over alleged sex-based employment practices, and the company agreed to a $45,750,000 consent decree supervised by the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Women who worked in California for Activision Blizzard, Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment or a subsidiary — as employees, or through a temporary staffing agency for at least 90 days — at any time between October 12, 2015 and December 31, 2020 may be eligible for a share. There is nothing to file: the administrator mailed a check with the court-authorized notice, and a check has to be cashed within 180 days of its date or the share is redistributed to others. Contacting the administrator named in the notice costs nothing, which is the route if you think you were covered and no check reached you.

There is no claim form for this one. The administrator pays consumers it has already identified, so the useful step is to make sure they can reach you — not to file anything. Anyone offering to file it for you, for a fee, is selling you nothing.

When the money moves

What the official materials say about the payment schedule for this settlement, and what the administrator has published since. Every figure below is linked to the page it was read from.

Expected

The administrator mailed a check together with the court-authorized notice. The notice says a check expires 180 days after the date printed on it, and that money not accepted by then may be redistributed as a second, proportionate payment to the people who did accept the first one.

Read off the official notice, in its own words. These dates slip — an appeal can move a distribution by a year or more — so treat it as the administrator's plan rather than a schedule.

California Civil Rights Department v. Activision Blizzard, Inc., et al. · 21-STCV-26571 · Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles

There is no claim form and no amount to choose. The notice says each covered employee and each covered contractor was allocated a minimum payment of $8,500, plus a tenure payment based on pay periods worked, less an offset if a release was signed with the company before December 20, 2023, plus a share of the reallocated offsets. Half of the gross figure is treated as wages and taxed, so the check is smaller than the gross. These are the notice's own figures, not a guaranteed payment.

Where the settlement fund goes

A $45,750,000 settlement fund. The notice says attorneys' fees and costs of $9,125,000 were agreed separately and were not deducted from anyone's allocated payment, that unused funds are redistributed among the people who participate, and that any remainder afterwards goes to charities working on employment rights for workers in California.

Why this case happened

The California Civil Rights Department sued Activision Blizzard in 2021, alleging unlawful employment practices based on sex under California law. The company denies the allegations and no court or jury decided the case; the parties agreed in December 2023 to resolve it through a consent decree, which a Los Angeles judge supervises.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Did you work for Activision Blizzard in California, as an employee or through a temporary staffing agency, at any time between October 12, 2015 and December 31, 2020?

Staffing-agency workers are covered if the assignment ran at least 90 days.

During that period, did you identify to Activision Blizzard or to your staffing agency as a woman?

The notice covers anyone who self-identified as a cisgender or transgender woman during the covered period.

Have you moved since 2020, or received a settlement check you have not yet cashed?

Checks were mailed to the address on file and expire 180 days after their date, so a move is the usual reason one never arrived.
