TED video privacy settlement

The TED Foundation has settled Sutton v. TED Foundation Inc. in the Southern District of New York, a Video Privacy Protection Act case alleging that information about videos account holders watched was shared with third-party services. If you held a TED account in the United States and watched a prerecorded video on TED.com or through the TED mobile apps between October 19, 2021 and July 14, 2026, you may be eligible: two free months of TED membership, valued at a minimum of $10.00, come automatically without filing anything, while a claim form instead gets a $5.00 cash payment from a pool capped at $350,000.00. The cash is reduced pro rata if claims overflow that cap, so treat $5.00 as a ceiling rather than a certainty. Claims, objections and exclusions all close October 26, 2026, the form asks for the 8-digit Claim ID and 4-digit PIN from your notice, and filing on the official site is free.

Sutton v. TED Foundation Inc. · 1:23-cv-09219-DEH · U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York

Doing nothing gets two free months of TED membership, which the notice values at a minimum of $10.00. Filing a claim instead gets a $5.00 cash payment out of a pool capped at $350,000.00, subject to pro rata reduction if valid claims exceed that cap — so $5.00 is a ceiling and an estimate, not a promise. A third option donates the cash payment back to TED Foundation Inc.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Did you have a TED account in the United States between October 2021 and July 2026?
Did you watch a prerecorded video on TED.com or in the TED mobile app while signed in to that account?
Did you receive a notice with an 8-digit Claim ID and a 4-digit PIN?

The claim form needs both. Without them the membership option still arrives automatically.
