NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator
The Life Insurance Policy Locator is a free national search run by NAIC, the association of the fifty state insurance commissioners, for life insurance policies and annuities left behind by someone who has died. If a relative died and you believe you are a beneficiary, or you hold legal authority over their estate, you may be eligible to request a search using details taken from the death certificate; participating insurers then check their own records through a secure portal and any company that finds a policy contacts the beneficiary directly. NAIC reports that insurers confirmed more than 611,000 matches worth $13.18 billion through August 31, 2025, against more than 1.17 million requests received since the tool opened in November 2016 — so most searches come back with nothing. It cannot be used to look for a policy on a living person, a search can take 90 business days or more, and it is free on NAIC's own site.

The locator pays nothing itself — it asks participating insurers to check their records and, where there is a match, the company contacts the beneficiary directly to settle the policy. Whatever a policy is worth is set by that policy, not by this tool. NAIC reports searches can take 90 business days or more, and that insurers have confirmed matches on roughly half of one million of the 1.17 million requests received, so most searches return nothing. The service is free.
