CertainTeed Fiberglass Horizon shingle settlement

CertainTeed settled claims that its Horizon brand asphalt fiberglass roofing shingles were defective. If you own a building in the United States where CertainTeed Fiberglass Horizon shingles were installed between 1995 and 2010 and they show cracking, fishmouthing, curling, degranulating or other premature deterioration, you may be eligible for material reimbursement of $40.00 per square of the replacement area, prorated by the age of the roof, plus five more years of warranty coverage. A claim asks for photographs of the damage, proof that you own the building and proof of product identity, which a shingle sample shows best, and the court-approved claim form has to be emailed or postmarked by March 2, 2030. Filing on the official settlement site is free, and only the administrator and CertainTeed decide which claims are paid.

Expected

The notice says payments are made only after the court grants final approval and the settlement becomes effective, and that claims filing opened 30 days after that effective date. No payment date is published.

Read off the official notice, in its own words. These dates slip — an appeal can move a distribution by a year or more — so treat it as the administrator's plan rather than a schedule.

Segebarth, et al. v. CertainTeed LLC · 2:19-cv-05500-PD · U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania

Material reimbursement is $40.00 per square of the replacement area, prorated month by month: at 1/384 per month for roofs whose warranty term becomes 30 years, and 1/444 per month for roofs whose term becomes 35 years, so an older roof recovers less. Eligible claims also get five extra years of warranty coverage. Figures are estimates and depend on how much qualifying damage CertainTeed finds on your roof.

Eligibility questions

These questions help you decide whether to read the official notice. They are not a legal determination.

Do you own a building in the United States with CertainTeed Fiberglass Horizon shingles installed between 1995 and 2010?
Do those shingles show cracking, fishmouthing, curling, degranulating or other premature deterioration?

The settlement calls this Qualifying Damage and the claim form asks for photographs of it.

Are your Horizon shingles the organic line rather than the fiberglass line?

Organic Horizon shingles are not covered by this settlement.

Are you the original owner of the property, or the second owner of it?

The limited warranty reaches the original owner and the eligible later owners described in it; the claim form asks which you are.
