State unclaimed-property searches are official — and always free

States hold billions in forgotten bank accounts, refunds, and insurance proceeds. The official searches cost nothing, and anyone charging a 'search fee' is unnecessary at best.

When a company owes you money and cannot find you — a closed bank account, an uncashed check, a utility deposit — the funds eventually go to the state. State treasurers hold that property until the rightful owner claims it. There is no deadline in most states, and searching is free.

The official starting points are MissingMoney.com, which is endorsed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), and each state's own treasurer website.

How to search safely

Search your name in every state where you have lived, including old addresses and former names. If you find a match, the claim goes through the state itself — you will verify your identity directly with the treasurer's office.

Be skeptical of 'finder' services that offer to claim money for a percentage. States cap or regulate these fees, and everything a finder does, you can do yourself for free on the official site.

Where this site fits

We keep lookup records for the major official searches — state treasurers, PBGC pensions, HUD refunds, unpaid wages, and more — each linking straight to the government page. We never show person-level results; the search always happens on the official site.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not legal advice. We do not file claims, and filing on the official administrator or government site is always free. If anything here disagrees with an official notice, the official notice controls.
